4 reasons why one of the next moves of God will be in the marketplace

By Kyle Patterson

When Jesus talked to the woman at the well, they began to talk about where God is to be worshipped. The woman was looking for a place, God was looking for a heart to dwell in. Jesus explained God is seeking worshippers in spirit and in truth. Not in a specific place but a specific heart attitude and posture. The truth is the kingdom of God is not here nor there, the kingdom of God is within every believer. Therefore, God moves when we move and step out to do the works Jesus commanded us to do, i.e. preach the gospel, heal the sick, cast out demons, and do the works of the kingdom of God. I believe the implication for believer is that this work was not going to happen in the church, but in the marketplace, or the public square when the believers were bringing the gospel to a new town or city. Take a look in Matthew 10:7-8:

As you go, proclaim this message: ‘The kingdom of heaven has come near.’ 8 Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those who have leprosy, drive out demons. Freely you have received; freely give.

As you go, in your going, everywhere you go, proclaim, talk about, share, tell others this message. The message was not set up a pulpit, gather people to a church building, and then once you have a big enough crowd, begin preaching. Though that is certainly not wrong and not outside the bounds of Scripture, but the point is, everywhere you go, bring this message to those you meet. The message isn't confined to a church experience. It's good enough news to share with anyone you meet, wherever you are. If you think about where the people are, where you build relationships, where people are talking and meeting and needs are out in the open. It's in the marketplace, in your coming and going and for at least four reasons below, I agree with Billy Graham who said, "I believe one of the next moves of God will be through ordinary believers in the marketplace."

1) The priesthood of all believers.

Ephesians 4 tells us the offices of the apostle, prophet, evangelist, pastor, and teacher exist to equip God's people for the work of the ministry. As in you. So you’re in ministry. You’re a minister and when you go to church, you’re being equipped to go back into the world and minister and fulfill your ministry.

2) Spiritual gifts.

God has given to each one of us spiritual gifts that at the time of receiving the Spirit are activated in our lives. These gifts aren’t limited to use within the church, they can be exercised anywhere with anyone. God is always wanting to touch lives and change hearts and he has chosen you to be a conduit for him to work through. So don’t be afraid to step out and use the gifts God gives you. This could be the gift of generosity in meeting a need God places on your heart. It could be praying for a physical need of someone you meet or a prophetic impression that God gives you for a person you meet.

3) You are the temple of God.

God no longer dwells in a temple made by human hands. He lives inside the heart and body of every believer. The uncreated God has chosen you to live in and work through. That’s an amazing gift and opportunity. Don't you realize that all of you together are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God lives in you? 1 Corinthians 3:16.

4) The Holy Spirit.

Jesus actually said it was better that he go away because the Holy Spirit would be poured out to be with us forever. Christ hasn’t left us, he has come by his Spirit into the life of every believer and because he is with us, he is present with us in the marketplace, convicting of sin, pointing hearts to Jesus and working through your words and testimony.

What about you, how could God use you in your workplace? What needs has God been laying on your heart? What is holding you back from stepping out in faith?
