Porn: A Public Health Crisis

Porn: A Public Health Crisis

New resolutions are being passed in several states to safeguard against the use of pornography and combat the growing health concerns of the epidemic. Utah, South Dakota and Virginia are three states taking the lead in combating the ongoing concerns over the use of pornography and to acknowledge the growing health concerns over the use of porn among men, women and even children. Tennessee is expected to follow with a similar resolution.

Virginia's resolution passed with a 82-8 vote earlier this month as reported by Roanoke states, "The resolution, which expresses the opinion of the House and calls generally for education, research and societal change, lays out a litany of evils associated with porn. It may lead to the “hypersexualization of teenagers,” “may normalize violence and abuse,” “equates violence with sex and pain with pleasure” and “is linked to an increased likelihood that individuals will engage in group intercourse.”

According to an article published in Relevant Magazine, 27% of children are being exposed to pornography before they reach puberty. A study from 2014 confirmed the link between  using porn and decreased motivation and impaired impulse control.

Another study conducted by Pure Desire Ministries revealed that Christians are not immune to the problem either with a reported 68 percent of church-going men viewing pornography on a regular basis and women aren't exempt either.

Author BIll Perkins writes, "The pervasive sin of Internet pornography is taking hold in our churches...and most leaders aren't doing much to address it."

Perkins believes the issues is one that can't be ignored as more and more people are being impacted by porn, "Our strategy to achieve sexual purity has to be like a laser-guided missile. These weapons constantly adapt to the changing terrain as they zero in on their target. Because the moral terrain is constantly changing, we must be adept in adapting as we pursue our target: sexual purity."

XXX Church, a congregation based out of Las Vegas that specifically reaches out to people entangled in the industry of porn making and consumption says their outreach includes three facets,

  • Awareness - We use the web, social media, and news media to tell a story often left untold.
  • Prevention - We are the largest site online and the most recognized voice on the planet on the issue of pornography.
  • Recovery - We are committed to help men and women conquer sexual issues like pornography addiction and sex addiction and regain control of their lives.

The truth is no one is outside of the grace of God and the important thing is for Christian organization to allow God's redemptive hand to touch those involved in porn, "We are confident there is a full life available to everyone, so we stand against the accepted norms about sexual behaviors and pornography knowing that hope, healing, and true satisfaction are within reach for all us."
