Paul Ryan Says Repeal Obamacare, Relieve Americans
Speaker of the House, Paul Ryan (R-WI), said too many American's are suffering under Obamacare and immediate action needs to be take to overturn the law, something Republicans are working to do immediately upon Trump taking office. Democrats, however, are not in favor of the actions proposed by Ryan and other Republicans. Ryan believes Democrats are instead trying to scare Americans into believing that their health coverage will end in February, when Ryan insists that is not the case stating,
"What I think the Democrats are trying to do—they’re trying to scare Americans into trying to keep Obamacare. They’re trying to scare Americans into thinking that this February, your health care plan is going to go away. That’s not true. That’s not happening. Let’s take a step back and remember a couple of things," Ryan stated.
He went on to say Obamacare is a failed law, confirmed by America's largest insurer, Aetna, pulling out.
“This law is a failed law. The largest health [insurer] in America, United . . . pulled out. Aetna pulled out. The law is failing very quickly, and that means people have nothing. Or, if they have health insurance, their deductable is so high it doesn’t even feel like you have insurance. And their premiums are going up double digits. . . . So, we have an obligation to protect our country from a failing health care system which is Obamacare.”
But his opponents are insisting the government needs to run the American healthcare system. Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY) said that overthrowing Obamacare would make America sick again.
"The Republican plan to cut healthcare wouldn't 'make America great again,'" Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer told reporters according to Reuters, invoking Trump's campaign slogan. "It would make America sick again and lead to chaos instead of affordable care."
Vice President Mike Pence though plans to lower the costs of healthcare while not growing the size and power of the government. He went on record this week saying,
"The first order of business is to keep our promise to repeal Obamacare and replace it with the kind of healthcare reform that will lower the cost of health insurance without growing the size of government," as reported by Reuters.
As part of the overthrow of Obamacare, the new legislation would also include the defunding of Planned Parenthood. CBN reports,
"Planned Parenthood legislation would be in our reconciliation bill," Ryan said at a news conference in response to a question about plans to defund the organization.
“And yes, ideologues on the left are going to try and keep this because they want government to run health care. . . . And, we will pass a repeal and a replacement of this bill, and we will have a suitable transition time period so that there is a better place for people to go, and we don’t pull the rug out from under anybody while this transition period occurs. What I think the Democrats are trying to put in the impression of Americans is that . . . ‘you’re going to wake up one morning this year and you’ll have nothing. Your plan will be cancelled and you’ll be out on the street and out in the cold.’ That’s not true. Those are just mere scare tactics from ideologues on the left who are simply trying to keep this law in place, and that’s not what the American people want, it’s not what they deserve, and honestly . . . it’s an unsustainable law."
