North Korea Conducts Nuclear Test
“North Korea said it conducted a ‘higher level’ nuclear test explosion on Friday, its fifth atomic test and the second in eight months,” according to the Associated Press.
“The United States condemns North Korea's September 9 nuclear test in the strongest possible terms as a grave threat to regional security and to international peace and stability,” President Obama said in a statement. “North Korea stands out as the only country to have tested nuclear weapons this century.”
Obama also said the test violated multiple UN Security Resolutions
“To be clear, the United States does not, and never will, accept North Korea as a nuclear state,” according to the statement. “Far from achieving its stated national security and economic development goals, North Korea's provocative and destabilizing actions have instead served to isolate and impoverish its people through its relentless pursuit of nuclear weapons and ballistic missile capabilities.”
International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Yukiya Amano called the test “a deeply troubling and regrettable act.”
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) is also reporting that the blast likely set off an “artificial earthquake” that measured 5.3 on the Richter scale.
