U.S. Pledges $38 Billion In Military Aid To Israel

The United States pledged $38 billion dollars in military aid for Israel today. U.S. Security Advisor Susan Rice called the investment the “single largest pledge of military assistance to any country in American history.”

“For as long as the state of Israel has existed, the United States has been Israel’s greatest friend and partner, a fact underscored again today,” President Obama said in a statement released by the White House. “This commitment to Israel’s security has been unwavering and is based on a genuine and abiding concern for the welfare of the Israeli people and the future of the State of Israel.”

“Today, we’re making another unprecedented commitment to the security of Israel and the Israeli people,” Ambassador Rice said in the statement. “Today, we are signing a memorandum of understanding, or a MOU, to provide Israel $38 billion in military aid over ten years, including $33 billion in foreign military financing funds and an unprecedented commitment of $5 billion for missile defense.”

This funding will allow the Israeli military to acquire new F-35 and F-15 fighter jets, “substantially enhance the mobility of its ground forces and will help Israel to further strengthen is missile defense systems like the Iron Dome.”

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a statement that “the agreement will assist us in continuing to build up our military strength and in continuing to improve our missile defense. This is of course a very important achievement for the State of Israel, and Israeli citizens can rightly be proud of it.”

Prime Minister Netanyahu also thanked President Obama, and the “many, many friends in the American Congress and among the American people for their support…”
