Prophet Nahum's Tomb in Danger
The Prophet Nahum's tomb in Iraq is in danger of both decay and desecration according to Jewish News Service (JNS). But Sherd Mamsani, Jewish representative of the Iraqi Kurdistan Ministry of Endowment and Religious affairs is taking it upon himself to do something.
The tomb is located in Al Qosh, inside a synagogue, guarded by a Christian family in Al Qosh, Iraq, a predominantly Christian town. As ISIS has made inroads into the region, a growing concern exists of the tombs safety.
Sherd Mamsani is organizing an effort to draw attention to the need to preserve these historic sites.
The Prophet Nahum is known for predicting the fall of the Assyrian Empire.
In recent years Jewish groups have been visiting the grave, and concern has been growing about the tomb's proximity to areas where the Islamic State is active, according to JNS.
"We demand all the historical heritage preservation organizations, the United Nations, UNESCO, the KRG and all the representatives of countries in Kurdistan help to prevent the destruction of this historical monument," Mamsani told JNS.
