Hope In Haiti
In 2010, I had the opportunity to go to Haiti with Youth With A Mission to help rebuild after the catastrophic 7.0 magnitude earthquake and aftershocks devastated the country. That experience changed my life. I was able to help build a home for a family that lost everything during the earthquake and ended up moving to Haiti and lived there for 7 months. I will never forget the people I met or the things I experienced in 2010. The poor living conditions of so many of the Haitian people were unbelievably hard to see then, and today, the same poor living conditions still exist. I continue to do what I can to help the people there. Since I’ve been back home, the people in Haiti are still in my heart. God has given me a heart for the Haitian people. I am a mom of three now and life keeps me busy, but I still have a servant’s heart and God continues to call me to Haiti. I just kept praying God would show me what he wants me to do.
Recently, I learned of a small village on the island of Port Plume, in the Azuei lake near the border of Haiti and the Dominican Republic. There are roughly 150 families and close to 300 children living on this island, some of which have been there for over 12 years. For all of this time they have been struggling to survive. They go without eating for days at a time and have very limited access to clean water, due to the island being surrounded by salt water. Right now, the only way they get fresh water to them is by a boat, which is limited. I recently had asked someone with Foundation For Peace in Haiti to visit the island. They will be taking a medical team there in July for me and he witnessed the continually poor living conditions. He spoke of naked children with no clothes and no shoes. My heart continues to break at every thought that they do not have their most basic needs met. I am determined to do whatever I can to help them.
After learning of these families, I began praying for them and asking God if I am supposed to try and help. I kept thinking that this was probably a project too big for me to handle. They have been living there for so long and no one has been able to get them access to water. I knew that if this is what God wants me to do, then I am to be obedient and he would open the doors. So for the last couple of months I have been researching how to get water to them and talked with many ministries and organizations to see what could be done. I became very discouraged and questioned God because in order to get water to the island it would not be easy and would be very expensive. I continued praying that God would direct me. I knew it might be too big of a project for me, but not for God.
After much research, I located an organization in Mesa, Arizona called Garden Pool, a non-profit organization providing sustainable food. I have teamed up with Garden Pool and taken it upon myself to raise funds for these precious people.
A group of volunteers from Garden Pool are returning to Haiti next month and are going to build an amazing project on the island, provided I can help them raise the needed funds. The money raised will provide the building materials and cover shipping costs for the materials needed to build a rain catchment/water harvesting system and a sustainable farm (see website!). We'll also provide eggs from chickens and ducks, milk from goats, solar-powered light and oven.
This sustainable food project will allow the people to grow food and raise goats and chickens for fresh eggs and milk. A tilapia pond will also be built for raising fish. This project will give these families a new start and will give them the opportunity to support their families.
But it's not just about food and water. It’s about feeding these family's souls. I want these people to know that no matter what they are facing, God loves them. That even though it seems their world is falling apart, He will always be there for them. That even if they have lost everything and have nothing, God still offers His greatest gift-never ending love and eternal life through His Son, Jesus Christ. So many people desperately need to know this truth and they need to know His love never fails!
