An Independent Run Would Divide Party Says McConnell
Former Governor Mitt Romney (R-MA) and Bill Kristol, editor of Weekly Standard conspired earlier this May to raise up by force an independent candidate to compete for the Presidential office against Republican presumptive nominee Donald Trump. A handful of insider Republicans and Conservatives have questioned Trump's track record and stand on what they call key conservative issues. Kristol went so far as to take to Twitter Sunday saying, “There will be an independent candidate -- an impressive one, with a strong team and a real chance.”
Later however Kristol seemed to back track on his power play move saying on Twitter, "I'm sorry the mere mention of an independent candidate has so unnerved him (Trump)."
Kristol and Romney's proposal has been met with resistance however including Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell telling Fox & Friends this morning, “That can only help elect Hillary Clinton."
McConnell went on to say that Trump has accumulated the vote of the American Republican party, “the good, old-fashioned way … and we ought to respect the wishes” of GOP voters.
Donald Trump also had a few choice words for Kristol, taking to Twitter over the long Memorial Day weekend to fight this one out in his customary style saying,
Bill Kristol has been wrong for 2yrs-an embarrassed loser, but if the GOP can't control their own, then they are not a party. Be tough, R's!— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) May 29, 2016
