Immigrants Shipwrecked At Sea
At least 5 are dead in what appears to be an overloaded ship headed from Libya to Italy. According to Reuters, 550 passengers were packed into a wooden fishing boat when the boat capsized.
An Italian navy patrol boat noticed that the fishing boat was in trouble, attempted to help but because of sudden movement by passengers, the boat flipped right over, according to a statement by the Italian navy patrol.
According to the International Organization for Migration, over 320,000 migrants have arrived on Italian shores by boat over the last 2 years and an estimated 7,000 died in the Mediterranean on their way to the shores of Europe.
Many of the refugees are fleeing war, persecution and ISIS threats. According to Open Doors UK, "Libya has descended into lawlessness since the fall of Gaddafi in 2011, giving groups such as the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS) free reign to attack Christian."
Christians are also forbidden to share their faith in Libya. Though they legally can practice Christianity, dozens of Christians have been killed in the last year, making the risk of journeying to Europe that much more appealing.
The lack of resources and strong demand for boat access to cross the open seas however has caused thousands of deaths on the journey.
