Muslim Groups Trying to Prosecute Jakarta, Indonesia Governor
Muslim Groups in Jakarta, Indonesia are attempting to prosecute their own Governor for "insulting the Qur'an," according to the latest reports.
The accusation is that Governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, a Christian in the Muslim dominated area should go to trial for insulting the Islam religion during his campaign for governor. Earlier this month up to 100,000 people reportedly join in protests and demonstrations in support of Purnama being tried for blasphemy and face up to 5 years in prison. Purnama is running for reelection this February.
This past Saturday, November 19 however an estimated 10,000 supports of Purnama showed their support. Christian Examiner reports,
The peaceful protest Saturday attracted more than 10,000 people, most of whom were young and part of a generation that is open to new ideas. They were joined by religious leaders, legislators and the leaders of several human rights organizations.
We are gathering here not to protest but to show that we are not easily divided by religious or political issues," said Budiman Sujatmiko, an Indonesian legislator.
